If My Tooth is Cracked Will the Root Become Exposed and Hurt?

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

Cracked teeth are not uncommon when it comes to mouth incidences. This occurs when a crack runs from the biting surface (top of the teeth) down towards the root. In some instances, a cracked tooth may exceed below the gum line and into the root. This does not necessarily mean that the root has become exposed but the root will be affected.

If you bite down and feel a twinge of pain, it could mean that you have indeed cracked a tooth. Chewing may cause pain as well in the location of the cracked tooth. Extreme temperatures like hot or cold can also cause the tooth to be sensitive. It is important to know that with a cracked tooth pain may not be constant, but may act up more when chewing or drinking liquids.

Why does a cracked tooth hurt?

The pulp of the tooth, which contains the blood vessels and tooth’s nerves, is important when dealing with a cracked tooth. It is the deepest part of the tooth. If the hard outer tissues of a tooth are cracked, chewing can cause movement of pieces making the pulp become irritated. If the pulp becomes severely damaged, it will no longer be able to heal itself.

At first, a crack may only hurt when chewing or exposed to temperatures of hot or cold. However, in time, if the crack is left untreated this could lead to infection of the pulp tissue. The infection could potentially spread to the bone and gum surround the tooth, which is an experience that would be best avoided.

Treatment

It cannot be stressed enough that treatment of cracked teeth is important! Some cracks may only need to be bonded or receive a root canal treatment, whereas more severe cases may involve an extraction. By visiting with a dentist, they will be able to ensure the proper treatment and make sure that you are pain free along the way.
