Can I Start a Diet After Dental Implants?

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

After undergoing dental implant surgery, many patients have questions related to their diets. Here at Mile High Smiles, we have very specific diet recommendations for patients who have received dental implants. In order to protect the surgical site and improve comfort post-surgery, we recommend a soft diet.

A soft diet may include softer fruits such as bananas, melons, peaches, and berries as well as foods like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, applesauce, oatmeal, puddings, broiled fish, ground beef, stewed chicken, and home cooked broth. Patients should avoid hard foods like chips and pretzels to prevent pain while eating and drink plenty of water to keep their immune system in good shape.

Even if patients don’t feel like eating a lot after surgery, they should make an effort to maintain a diet with a normal calorie level that’s high in fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. Contrary to popular belief, beginning a diet after surgery is not a good idea. Patients should eat as normally as possible as dieting may have detrimental effects on healing and reduce the chances of a successful procedure.

After dental implant surgery, the bodies of patients need optimal nutrition so that they can gain strength and feel better faster. If patients have a special diet because of a condition like diabetes or celiac disease, they should adhere to their particular eating habits.
