Sinus Drainage After a Tooth Extraction – Is This a Problem?

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

A tooth extraction is performed when a tooth must be removed because it’s damaged beyond repair. It’s a common procedure for patients with wisdom teeth that may be impacted or lead to problems down the road.

Dr. Brian Levitin of Mile High Smiles may suggest tooth extractions if you’re facing severely decayed teeth, gum disease that leads to bone loss, non-functional or poorly functional teeth, teeth that have been fractured and can’t be repaired.

In the event you do need a tooth extraction, don’t worry. The procedure is fast, safe, and painless as it is performed under a local anesthetic. After a tooth extraction, Dr. Levitin will advise that you return home and get as much rest as possible.

Depending on the details of your procedure, you may notice some bleeding, soreness, oozing, or discomfort. Rest assured these side effects are completely normal and can be managed with an over-the-counter pain medication such as Aleve or Tylenol.

If your sinus becomes damaged or exposed during a tooth extraction, you may also notice sinus damage and related symptoms like periodic nose bleeding from the extraction site and liquid coming out of the nose while you drink. Please contact our office if this happens so that Dr. Levitin can examine the situation. He may close the exposed sinus and prescribe antibiotics to assist with the healing process.

Fortunately, sinus damage due to a tooth extraction isn’t very common, especially when the procedure is performed by a skilled dentist like Dr. Levitin. He is very careful when he removes upper teeth and does this best to avoid this issue as much as possible.
