Does Milk Really Make Your Teeth Stronger?

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

You probably know that calcium is essential for building strong bones. Milk is loaded with calcium. Believe it or not, just one cup of it offers almost 300 milligrams of calcium. Here at Mile High Smiles, we often get asked whether teeth can strengthen your teeth. The truth is it may.

Research has shown that the calcium found in milk may protect your teeth against gum disease and keep your jaw bone in its optimal shape. If you are a woman and don’t get enough calcium from your daily diet, you are at a higher risk of gum disease. By drinking low-fat or skim milk, you can receive the most nutrients without having to worry about the artery clogging fat found in 2% or whole milk.

In the event you do not like the taste of milk, you can eat other dairy products that can strengthen your teeth. Cheese and yogurt (when consumed in moderation, of course) may also protect your teeth against decay and disease. In addition, protein-rich foods, whole grains, Vitamin C, and crunchy veggies can improve the health of your teeth.

Keep in mind that while drinking the right beverages and eating the right foods can lead to strong teeth, there are other things you must do to maintain optimal oral health. Be sure to brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day. Also, floss your teeth gently at least once a day to get rid of plaque, bacteria, and food particles that you are unable to reach by brushing.

Additionally, visit your dentist every six months or so for a routine exam and cleaning, refrain from smoking or any type of tobacco use, and stop other bad habits such as chewing ice or gum with sugar.
