Does Higher Elevation Make Teeth Heal Quicker After Dental Implants?

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

Here at Mile High Smiles, many of our patients ask us how the higher elevation in Colorado may affect their teeth. We explain to them that higher elevation often leads to increased toothache or pain. This discomfort is referred to as barodontalgia and aggravated by higher elevations.

Higher elevation does not necessarily allow teeth to heal quicker after dental implants. However, if you undergo a dental implant procedure, Dr. Levitin will recommend a number of tips to expedite healing. These tips include:

Take Antibiotics

Dr. Levitin may prescribe antibiotics to help you prevent infection at the site of the surgery. You should begin taking these antibiotics as soon as he tells you to.

Keep the Surgical Site Clean

To allow the dental implants to heal safely, the surgical site must be clean. You should brush your team as you normally would but brush around any sutures and refrain from brushing the implant.

Reduce Swelling

After your dental implant procedure, you can expect some swelling. To reduce it, try to elevate your head and avoid intense physical activity. Using ice packs for the first 48 hours can assist with swelling as well.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking after dental implant surgery can lead to an increased risk of infection. You should avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks after your procedure.
