Face Swelling After Tooth Extractions – What to Do

Mile High Smiles in Lakewood, CO

What You need to Know...

One of the most common procedures we perform at Mile High Smiles is a tooth extraction. In a perfect world, we’d be able to preserve your tooth. But if that isn’t possible, we’ll safely extract or remove it. The two types of extractions are simple extractions and surgical extractions.

For simple extractions, we use local anesthesia. They are typically performed on teeth that can be seen in the mouth. Surgical extractions, on the other hand, are a bit more complex. If teeth can’t be accessed easily because they haven’t fully erupted or have been broken under the gumline, a surgical extraction is likely the best option.

During a surgical extraction, a dentist will administer general anesthesia and make an incision. This way they’ll elevate the soft tissues that cover the tooth. Fortunately, both procedures are pretty painless, despite how intense they may sound.

Tooth Extraction Recovery

Once a dentist has extracted a tooth, you’ll probably notice some on your face, primarily in the mouth, cheek, eyes, and sides of your face. Don’t worry as this is 100% normal. Swelling is your body’s healthy reaction to a procedure like an extraction. In most cases, the swelling will be obvious the day after and become even more apparent 48 to 72 hours afterwards.

You can use ice packs to reduce any swelling and discomfort. Be sure to apply them to the outside of your face over the area where the extraction was performed. We recommend you do so for 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off while you’re awake. If you use ice packs after 48 hours post extraction, you probably won’t benefit from them. Therefore, it’s wise to apply them as soon as you face the swelling, within the first 24 to 48 hours.
