What You need to Know...

Dentures, like clothes, are not the most comfortable when they don’t fit right. In fact, when dentures don’t fit properly it can make speaking much more difficult and it may negatively affect the ability to eat also. Some individuals may even experience sore spots in the mouth where the dentures may rub too closely with the gums. If at any point your dentures feel loose or they simply don’t feel normal to you, it would be in your best interest to contact the dentist for a proper evaluation.

Once at your appointment, the dentist will take notes regarding the overall fit of your dentures. If there are sore spots or spots that seem to be rubbing too much against the gums, this should be communicated to the dentist at this time. More than likely, some minor adjustments can be made to the dentures to reduce the spots that may be rubbing too closely against the gums.

On the other hand, if you seem to have dentures that feel loose or seem to “wiggle,” many patients find that a denture adhesive can help to provide a solution. The denture adhesive works by adhering to both the dentures and the tissue in the mouth, improving the retention. Many denture adhesives are available on the market, but you can consult with your dentist to see which brand may work best for you. It is important to note that you should not stop using a denture adhesive if you are allergic to the adhesive or have any open cuts or sores in the mouth.

For dentures that will not stay in no matter what you try, the dentist may suggest a “reline,” which will improve the fit of the base of the denture to the jaw. Relines are possible given that the mouth is healthy and there is adequate enough of jawbone available. If a reline cannot be conducted, than the dentist may consider remaking or redesigning the denture.
