Can Dental Implants Cause Ear Problems?

An earache or ear problems can cause extreme pain at times. Typically, one’s first assumption with any ear problem is that the pain is directly associated with the ear. However, the pain that one may be experiencing could be caused by dental problems. This is termed as “referred pain,” pain felt in an area remote from the site of origin.

Dental implants and ear pain

Dental implants are highly reputable and have been a large success for many patients. Dental implants have been proven to be one of the most effective ways to replace a single, missing tooth. The implant is made out titanium and serves as an artificial tooth root. A crown is placed to serve as the artificial tooth that matches natural teeth.

Dental implants are performed in a dental office and with proper sedation techniques to ensure a patient can be made as comfortable as possible. A local anesthetic is injected into the gums with a syringe in order to ensure that as little pain is felt during entirety of the implant procedure. Typically, it can take up to a few hours after the procedure to receive feeling back into the mouth or face depending on the amount of anesthetic injected by the dental professional.

As the anesthetic begins to wear off following the implant procedure, a patient may experience pain and discomfort. Although, a patient may claim this pain as ear pain, more than likely the pain is referred pain. Depending on the site of the procedure it is common for patients to experience “ear pain” from molars that are located in the back of the mouth. The soreness and tenderness of the implant site can easily make it feel like ear pain when altogether it is really pain coming from the mouth.
