Will Dental Implants Affect an MRI?

What You need to Know...

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that are usually comprised of titanium. They provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth and are intended to match your natural teeth.

Here at Mile High Smiles, Dr. Brian Levitin recommends dental implants to patients for various reasons. They are designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth and last for a long time as long as you care for them properly. In addition, they can improve your ability to eat and chew and restore your jawbone structure.

Some patients ask us whether dental implants will affect an MRI. MRIs can cause problems with objects made out of metals such as steel or iron. However, if a patient’s dental implants are made of titanium or titanium alloy then it is safe for them to undergo an MRI. Titanium is a non-magnetic material which does not respond to an MRI.

This is important as MRI scanners use powerful magnetic field to generate body images, which help diagnose medical conditions or determine the stage of a disease. They do not expose you to radiation like x-rays and are completely safe.

Before a technician performs the scan, you should let them know about any metla you may have in your mouth and body. This way, you can ensure that the image they produce is completely accurate.
