Every week, we get dozens of questions related to stitches and how long they take to dissolve after any type of dental procedure, especially getting dental implants. You can expect to feel the dissolvable stitches start to loosen and fall out within a week to 10 days. If you are concerned they are taking too long to dissolve contact the dental practice that put them in after day #10.
Unfortunately, most people believe that a missing tooth is nothing to be concerned about. However, it’s essential to understand exactly what happens when you lose a tooth. When a tooth falls out on its own, is extracted by a dentist, or knocked out as result of trauma, it is considered a loss by the body. The body has to adapt and understand why there is a missing bone that was once so necessary in the eating process.
When you lose a tooth, your gums will begin to form in, around the missing tooth and lead to contours and a ridgeline that is not natural. Since the jaw no longer has a tooth root, bone density loss may arise as well. In addition, the bones and connective tissues may become decayed and infected because they are no longer protected.
The good news is that dental implants may assist in resolving these issues by providing you with a permanent substitute for missing teeth. After the procedure, the recovery is fairly simple and similar to that of a tooth extraction. You’ll be asked to refrain from rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound on the day of surgery.
Many of our patients who undergo dental implant surgery ask how long your stitches will take to dissolve after the procedure. Like most dentists these days, we use dissolving stitches. We’ll tell you to refrain from touching them with your hands or tongue. You can expect them to loosen and eventually fall out within a week. In the event you notice some fall out in the first few days and there isn’t any bleeding or pain, do not worry.
