Accutane is a powerful drug used for the treatment of severe acne. When other treatments like over-the-counter and prescription creams and pills have failed to improve the skin, accutane may be recommended by a doctor or dermatologist. It is considered a “last resort” acne medication that often delivers excellent results.
Before taking accutane, it’s essential for patients to be aware of the side effects. Two of the most common side effects include chapped lips, which can be relieved by a lip moisturizer and dry skin, which can be resolved by frequently moisturizing the skin. There are several other side effects that are not as common yet do arise. These side effects include eye and eyelid irritation, decreased night vision, joint and muscle pain, temporary hair thinning, headaches, and increased sensitivity to the sun.
At Mile High Smiles, we have many patients who are on accutane to treat their acne. Some of them wonder whether jaw pain is a side effect of the medication. In most cases, jaw pain and accutane have no relation. While joint and muscle pain have been proven to occur, jaw pain is not a common side effect of accutane.
However, if you are on accutane and experiencing jaw pain, it is in your best interest to schedule an appointment at our office. Dr. Levitin will evaluate your jaw and let you know how to proceed.
